Delving into the mammalian cell nucleus: how sub-nuclear bodies influence the flow of information from DNA to RNA to proteins : School of Anatomy & Human Biology Seminar Series Other events...
The Seminar: The human cell nucleus is a structure with a high degree of internal organisation. ‘Paraspeckles’ are sub-nuclear bodies that are thought to be involved in a novel mechanism for controlling gene expression at the post-transcriptional stage. I will present recent work in collaboration with Professor Alan Harvey for the potential use of paraspeckle-regulated gene expression in controlling the expression of transgenes. Interestingly, paraspeckles are the only known example of a sub-nuclear body formed around a long non-protein-coding RNA scaffold. I will also present data showing that detailed knowledge of the structure of paraspeckles at the atomic, molecular and cellular level can give significant insights into paraspeckle function and sub-nuclear organisation.

The Speaker: Dr. Archa Fox is the Principal Investigator of the Cancer Gene Expression laboratory at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research. She has been at WAIMR for 4 years. Prior to moving to WA, Archa was a Post-doctoral Fellow in Dundee, UK, working with Professor Angus Lamond, investigating how nuclear organization affects gene expression. She was awarded her PhD in the year 2000 from the University of Sydney, having studied with Professor Merlin Crossley, now Dean of Science at the University of NSW.
