SEMINAR: Manning Clark House Day of Ideas - The Idea of Refuge
|
|
The Institute of Advanced Studies is pleased to be hosting a Manning Clark House Day of Ideas at UWA for the first time. This year's event will focus on the Idea of Refuge.
In recent times discussion and debate has centred on asylum seekers seeking refuge in a safe haven such as Australia. There is much confusion about who is a refugee or an asylum seeker, and who has a right to refuge in Australia.
We have invited a range of speakers to provide insight to discuss the idea of Refuge from a wide perspective. The audience will also be invited to participate in the discussion. The purpose of the day is to allow for the raising and sharing of ideas.
Speakers include:
* Richard Towle, UNHCR Regional Representative for Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific;
* Donna Green and Liz Minchin, authors of Screw Light Bulbs;
* Maria Saraceni, Partner, Norton Rose Australia and President, Ethnic Communities Council of WA;
* Michael O’Hara, CEO, Metropolitan Migrant Resource Centre;
* Carina Hoang, former Vietnamese refugee and author;
* Renay Grech, Acting CEO, ASeTTS, Perth;
* Carmen Lawrence, Director, Centre for the Study of Social Change, UWA;
* Sebastian Clark, President, Manning Clark House.
Registration: Full Fee:$65; Concession:$45. Lunch, refreshments and sundowner are included.
