I will present an overview of work that uses Australian honeybees, European bumblebees and Panamanian leaf cutting ants to study social insect reproduction and immunity. I will give an overview of how modern biochemical technologies such as proteomics are able to help evolutionary biologists, for example to understand the rules and the history of sexual conflicts. I will also introduce CIBER, the Collaborative Initiative for Bee Research (see www.ciber.science.uwa.edu.au) that was recently initiated at the University of Western Australia in response to the dramatic world wide declines of honey bee populations. CIBER is dedicated to facilitate interdisciplinary research on honeybees and offers a working platform for scientists to perform collaborative bee research alongside industry partners.
